This really was only an issue for one specific bus stop I used to frequent though, the rest were fine the vast majority of the time. If you're catching a regular bus at a regular stop, you actually can get a feel for how many minutes off it will be at a given time. Namely, nobody can account for the unpredictability of traffic in our area.
I've been using this tracker for years, basically since the day they introduced it, and it is definitely not based just on schedules, but on real time GPS locations.
